What is a Duck ID?
A Duck ID is a username. You'll use your Duck ID and password to access e-mail, Blackboard, and the university's wireless network and VPN services (among other things).
Please don't confuse your Duck ID with your UO ID number, which is the nine digit number printed on your UO photo ID. You'll use your UO ID number to log in to Duckweb, primarily.

How can I forward my e-mails to another account?
To view or change your e-mail forward, go to duckid.uoregon.edu.
Log in with your DuckID, then click on the Manage E-mail Forward link in the resulting page.
If you are an Exchange email user, you will be able to see your email forward into the Exchange system, but you will not be able to modify it.
Once configured, any new messages sent to your account will be automatically forwarded to the email address you've selected.
NOTE: If you are using Exchange, please contact your local IT support for assistance. (If you are using Outlook or Entourage then you are most likely using Exchange.)

What is shell access and how do I enable it?
Shell access gives you access to your account through a terminal program. By enabling this option and logging in, you have UNIX access to your files.
Most people will never need this type of access. We recommend leaving this option turned off unless you have a clear need for shell access.
You can enable shell access by logging in at duckid.uoregon.edu. Click "Manage Optional Account Access" and click the "Enable shell access" check box.

What's the difference between POP and IMAP?
POP and IMAP are two different ways e-mail programs access your inbox. POP stores messages on your computer, while IMAP stores your messages on a server. Most e-mail programs and all web-based e-mail use IMAP.
When given the choice, we strongly encourage the use of IMAP.

Are there any free alternatives to common software used by students?
For word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software, try OpenOffice. (We recommend setting the default file type to "97/2000/XP" for all documents, spreadsheets and presentations by navigating to Tools > Options > Load & Save > General > "Always save as.").
For a free Photoshop alternative, try GIMP.

How does a user create their own University of Oregon webpage?
While web development itself (HTML, CSS, coding etc.) is not supported by the helpdesk, we will provide assistance in getting your site up and running initially. To do this, turn on shell access for your account and use an SFTP program to upload your index.html file, the pointer file for your website, to your public_html folder in your shell account. The login authentication information is your Duck ID.

If you cannot connect and upload files to your webspace, insure you are connecting with SFTP (and not FTP), and make sure you've enabled shell access for your account. See how to enable shell access.

What is Banner?
Banner is a set of integrated Internet-native applications developed by SunGard Higher Education (SGHE) specifically for higher education. These applications perform administrative functions for finance, payroll, financial aid, and more.
The product is based on the Oracle platform built for medium-to-very-large student enrollments. SGHE currently has more than 1500 higher education clients.
We currently run the following modules: Student, Finance (FIS), Position Control and Payroll, Financial Aid, Web for Student, Web for Finance, Web for Faculty and Web for Employee.

To reset your Duck ID password, visit duckid.uoregon.edu, enter your Duck ID in the Username box and click the Forgot Password? link.
